The Basics of Poker

There are many variations of poker and at bet365 you can play several of the most popular versions of the world's favourite card game. We have a great selection of poker games available, starting with the hugely popular Texas Hold'em and including Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, 7-Card Stud and 5-Card Stud. No matter which game you want to play though, the basics of poker always remain the same.

In the following playing guides most attention has been paid to Texas Hold'em but many of the topics covered in the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced sections - such as Know Your Limits, Pot Odds, Implied Odds, Dealing with Tilt, Chasing Losses, Playing Your Opponents, Online Tells, Single and Multi-Table Tournaments Strategies, Luck in Poker and Poker Wisdom - can just as easily be applied to all of the different and exciting games offered by bet365.

Whether you’re playing a game with five cards or seven cards, community cards or a game where you’re only dealt your own cards, the aim is still to try and bet or bluff your opponents out of the hand and, ultimately, to make the best possible five card hand possible. A Royal Flush is still the strongest hand you can make and a High Card hand is the lowest. A straight is still a straight and a flush is still a flush.

No matter what game you’re playing, or which limit structure you’ve chosen, you will always get your chance to act and when that time comes it’s up to you to decide whether you want to Raise, Call, Check or Fold. If it’s a No Limit game you’re playing then the ‘All-In’ option will always be available for you to use. You will always be working towards getting a better hand than your opponents, or trying to bluff them out of the betting.

The skills and techniques required for each discipline can be totally different but at the heart of each game the basics of poker hold true. Play with the best possible starting cards whenever you can and try to make the strongest hand.

Always bear in mind that it’s far better to get involved in the action when you have a strong hand, not when you have a marginal hand and it’s clear that your opponent has a strong one. That advice holds true regardless of whichever version of poker you happen to be playing.

Find which game best suits your own skills and abilities, remember those basic poker tenets which hold true through all of the games and, more than anything, enjoy your time at the tables.
